Description

Deep Heat Max Strength 35g

Deep Heat Max Strength 35g is a topical pain relief cream in a 35g tube. It has a light, non-greasy feel and absorbs quickly. So, you can apply it without feeling like you’ve just buttered your shoulder.
Deep Heat Max Strength contains methyl salicylate 30% w/w and menthol 8% w/w. Together, these ingredients create a warming, counter-irritant sensation on the skin. As a result, the warmth can help ease discomfort at the area where you apply it.
The Mentholatum Co. Ltd. (East Kilbride, G74 5PE, Scotland, UK) manufactures and markets this product. It’s a licensed medicine, not a medical device. In other words, it contains active ingredients with specific safety rules, so it’s worth using it exactly as directed.
Because methyl salicylate is related to salicylates, Deep Heat Max Strength won’t suit everyone. For example, avoid it if you’re allergic to aspirin, ibuprofen, or other NSAIDs, or if you’ve had reactions to similar products before. Also, don’t use it with a heat pad or under occlusive dressings (covered, air-tight bandages), as this can increase irritation and side effects.
The cream includes excipients such as sorbitan stearate, polyoxyethylene hexadecyl ether, glyceryl stearate, sodium lauryl sulfate, poloxamer 407, and water. Store it below 25°C to keep it in good condition.

Deep Heat Max Strength 35g

More than double the methyl salicylate of standard Deep Heat Rub, delivering deep penetrating warmth for muscular and rheumatic pain.

Deep Heat Max Strength is a targeted topical analgesic cream for muscular and rheumatic pain. Where standard Deep Heat Heat Rub uses a combination of methyl salicylate, menthol, eucalyptus oil, and turpentine oil, Deep Heat Max Strength focuses on maximum-strength methyl salicylate at 30% w/w, more than double the methyl salicylate content of the standard rub, alongside 8% w/w menthol.

The result is a non-greasy cream that generates a deep, penetrating warming sensation at the site of pain. At Courier Pharmacy, we are here to help you understand which Deep Heat product is appropriate for your type of pain, and what the aspirin-like nature of methyl salicylate means for people with NSAID sensitivity.

Overview of Deep Heat Max Strength 35g

Counter-irritant analgesics work through a mechanism of sensory competition rather than pharmacological pain blockade. The warming sensation produced by methyl salicylate and menthol at the skin surface activates peripheral sensory receptors, generating a competing sensory signal that, via the Gate Control mechanism in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord, reduces the perception of the underlying pain. The warmth from methyl salicylate also promotes vasodilation at the application site, increasing local blood flow and contributing to the relaxation of muscle tension.

The salicylate chemistry of methyl salicylate is relevant beyond the contraindication list. When applied topically in quantities sufficient to produce significant skin penetration and absorption, methyl salicylate enters the systemic circulation as salicylate. Historically, cases of salicylate toxicity from excessive topical methyl salicylate application, particularly under occlusive wraps or from large-area application, have been documented. At recommended doses with hands-on massage application without occlusion, systemic absorption is low and clinically acceptable for most people.

For people managing chronic musculoskeletal conditions including fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, rheumatic conditions, or back pain, Deep Heat Max Strength occupies a useful position in the analgesic toolkit: stronger than standard Heat Rub, non-NSAID in the conventional tablet sense, and capable of being used before and after exercise. The interaction with anticoagulants is worth noting for warfarin users who use this product regularly on large areas.

Summary

  • Methyl salicylate is a salicylate ester, chemically related to salicylic acid and aspirin. This is why the product is contraindicated in people with hypersensitivity to aspirin, ibuprofen, or other NSAIDs: cross-reactivity can occur. This is the most important pharmacological distinction from purely menthol-based topical analgesics.
  • Counter-irritant analgesia works by generating a controlled sensory stimulus at the skin surface that competes with underlying pain signals via the Gate Control mechanism. Both methyl salicylate and menthol contribute to this through different receptor pathways.
  • The 30% w/w methyl salicylate in Deep Heat Max Strength represents more than double the concentration in standard Deep Heat Heat Rub, making it the higher-strength formulation in the cream range. This higher concentration provides more intense warming but also a higher salicylate exposure.
  • Systemic absorption of methyl salicylate through the skin occurs to a clinically measurable degree, particularly with large-area or occlusive application. This is why the product should not be used under occlusive dressings and why interaction cautions apply to anticoagulants.
  • The product can be used before and after exercise, making it useful for athletes and active individuals managing musculoskeletal pain in a training context.

Active ingredients in Deep Heat Max Strength 35g

Methyl salicylate 30% w/w is a salicylate ester that acts as both a counter-irritant and a topical analgesic. It produces a warming sensation at the skin surface through activation of TRPV1 heat-sensitive receptors in cutaneous sensory neurones. As a salicylate, it also inhibits prostaglandin synthesis locally to some degree, contributing to a mild anti-inflammatory effect in the underlying tissue. Its chemical relatedness to aspirin means it shares the cross-reactivity contraindication for NSAID-sensitive individuals.

Menthol 8% w/w activates TRPM8 cold-sensitive receptors in cutaneous sensory neurones, generating a cooling sensation that paradoxically contributes to the overall counter-irritant analgesic effect through Gate Control competition with pain signals. The combination of methyl salicylate's warmth and menthol's cooling creates the characteristic biphasic sensory experience of Deep Heat products.

What is Deep Heat Max Strength 35g for?

Deep Heat Max Strength 35g is indicated for the relief of muscular aches and pains and stiffness, including rheumatic pain, back pain, sciatica, fibrositis, bruises, and sprains. It can be used before exercise as a warm-up and after exercise to ease muscle soreness. For adults and children over 5 years.

Courierpharmacy.co.uk divider

How does Deep Heat Max Strength 35g work?

Methyl salicylate activates TRPV1 thermoreceptors in skin sensory fibres, generating a warming sensation. This sensory signal travels via afferent fibres to the dorsal horn of the spinal cord, where it activates inhibitory interneurons that reduce the transmission of pain signals from the same body region. This is the Gate Control mechanism: warmth-induced sensory input competes with and partially suppresses pain signal transmission.

Menthol activates TRPM8 cold receptors, generating a secondary cooling signal that adds a further competing sensory stimulus. The biphasic sensation, first cooling then warming, is a result of the simultaneous activation of these two receptor populations.

The vasodilation caused by methyl salicylate at the application site increases local blood flow, delivering oxygen and nutrients to the affected area and helping to remove metabolic waste products from fatigued or damaged muscle tissue. This contributes to the subjective sense of relief and the acceleration of muscle recovery after exercise.

How to use Deep Heat Max Strength 35g

For the first use, test on a small area of skin and observe for any reaction before applying more widely. Apply a thin layer of cream to the painful area and gently massage in until fully absorbed. Apply 2-3 times daily. Wash hands thoroughly with cool water immediately after application, as residual cream on the hands will cause intense heat sensations if transferred to eyes, nose, or other sensitive areas.

Do not apply under bandages or occlusive dressings, as this significantly increases skin penetration and systemic salicylate absorption. Do not use alongside a heat pad or heat device on the treated area. Do not apply to the face, around the eyes, on broken skin, or on irritated or infected skin. Do not apply to mucous membranes. Keep the cream away from children.

Warnings and precautions for Deep Heat Max Strength 35g

Do not use if you are allergic to aspirin, ibuprofen, or any other NSAID. Methyl salicylate is a salicylate and can trigger cross-reactive hypersensitivity in people with NSAID sensitivity. Do not use in people with aspirin-sensitive asthma.

Consult a doctor before use if pregnant, breastfeeding, or asthmatic. Methyl salicylate is absorbed systemically to some degree; its safety in pregnancy has not been established at topical therapeutic doses, and systemic salicylate exposure carries risks in pregnancy particularly in the third trimester.

Do not apply to large areas of skin simultaneously. Do not use under occlusive dressings or tight bandages. Do not use alongside heating devices on the treated area. If a skin reaction develops, stop using and seek pharmacist or medical advice. Not for children under 5 years.

Courierpharmacy.co.uk divider

Side effects of Deep Heat Max Strength 35g

Expected and intended effects include a warming and cooling sensation at the application site. These are the therapeutic mechanism, not adverse effects. Excessive application, or application under occlusive dressings, can produce intensified skin reactions including erythema, skin irritation, or a burning sensation that goes beyond the intended level.

Hypersensitivity reactions including contact dermatitis, urticaria, and pruritus can occur in susceptible individuals, particularly in those with NSAID or salicylate sensitivity. If a significant skin reaction occurs, wash off with cool water and seek pharmacist advice.

Systemic salicylate toxicity from topical application is very rare at standard therapeutic doses but has been reported with excessive use or occlusive application. Signs include ringing in the ears (tinnitus), confusion, and hyperventilation. Report any suspected adverse effect to the MHRA via yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk.

Drug interactions with Deep Heat Max Strength 35g

Because methyl salicylate is absorbed systemically in measurable quantities, particularly with large-area or frequent application, the interaction profile of topical salicylates is relevant. Anticoagulants including warfarin: topical salicylate application can enhance the anticoagulant effect; regular large-area use alongside warfarin warrants INR monitoring and pharmacist advice.

Other NSAIDs or aspirin: concurrent topical salicylate application and oral NSAID use increases total salicylate and NSAID burden. People already taking oral aspirin for cardiovascular prophylaxis should use topical methyl salicylate products cautiously and on limited areas. Methotrexate: systemic salicylates can increase methotrexate toxicity; caution with regular large-area topical application alongside methotrexate therapy.

For normal therapeutic use on limited areas as directed, systemic absorption is low and the interaction risk for most people is minimal. Caution is most relevant with frequent use on large areas or under occlusive dressings.

Frequently asked questions about Deep Heat Max Strength 35g

What is in Deep Heat Max Strength?

The active ingredients are methyl salicylate 30% w/w and menthol 8% w/w. Methyl salicylate is an aspirin-related salicylate; menthol is a counter-irritant that activates cold receptors. Excipients include sorbitan stearate, glyceryl stearate, sodium lauryl sulfate, poloxamer 407, and water.

How is Deep Heat Max Strength different from standard Deep Heat Heat Rub?

Deep Heat Max Strength contains methyl salicylate 30% w/w, more than double the concentration in standard Heat Rub. Max Strength is a cream; Heat Rub is a different formulation. Max Strength also does not contain eucalyptus or turpentine oil, which are in the standard rub.

Why can't I use it if I am allergic to aspirin?

Methyl salicylate is a salicylate ester chemically related to aspirin. People with hypersensitivity to aspirin, ibuprofen, or other NSAIDs can have a cross-reactive response to topical methyl salicylate. Do not use if you have known NSAID or aspirin sensitivity.

Can I use Deep Heat Max Strength with a heat pad?

No. Using a heat pad over the treated area significantly increases skin penetration and systemic salicylate absorption, and can cause excessive skin reactions. Do not combine with any heating device.

Can I bandage the treated area?

No. Occlusive dressings or bandages over the treated area increase methyl salicylate penetration and systemic absorption. Apply without covering.

How often can I apply Deep Heat Max Strength?

2-3 times daily. Wash hands immediately after each application.

Can I use Deep Heat Max Strength before exercise?

Yes. The product can be used both before exercise as a warm-up and after exercise to ease muscle soreness. Allow a few minutes for the cream to be absorbed before exercise.

Is Deep Heat Max Strength suitable for children?

For adults and children over 5 years only. Not for children under 5. Keep the cream away from children's reach after use.

Can I use Deep Heat Max Strength if I take warfarin?

Use with caution. Regular large-area application of topical salicylates can enhance the anticoagulant effect of warfarin. Seek pharmacist advice before using regularly alongside anticoagulant therapy.

Is Deep Heat Max Strength a medicine or a device?

It is a licensed medicine, not a medical device. Deep Heat Pain Relief Heat Patches are a medical device; Deep Heat Max Strength cream is a licensed GSL medicine.

Can I use Deep Heat Max Strength during pregnancy?

Consult a doctor before use in pregnancy. Methyl salicylate is absorbed systemically; its safety in pregnancy, particularly in the third trimester, has not been established at topical doses.

Why do I need to wash my hands after applying?

Residual methyl salicylate and menthol on the hands will cause intense heat and cooling sensations if transferred to the eyes, face, or other sensitive areas. Wash with cool water immediately after application.

What is the Gate Control mechanism?

Gate Control Theory, proposed by Melzack and Wall in 1965, describes how non-painful sensory stimuli (such as warmth or cooling) can partially suppress pain signal transmission in the spinal cord by activating inhibitory interneurons. Counter-irritants like Deep Heat Max Strength work through this mechanism.

Can I apply Deep Heat Max Strength to my lower back?

Yes. Back pain is among the licensed indications. Apply to the skin over the affected area and massage in gently. Do not use with a heat pad over the treated area.

Does Deep Heat Max Strength contain NSAIDs?

Methyl salicylate is a salicylate, not a traditional NSAID such as ibuprofen or naproxen, but it is chemically related to the salicylate class and is contraindicated in people with NSAID or aspirin hypersensitivity.

Can I use Deep Heat Max Strength if I have asthma?

Consult a doctor before use if asthmatic. Aspirin-sensitive asthma is a contraindication for products related to the salicylate class.

How does the cream feel when applied?

On application, the menthol initially produces a brief cooling sensation. This is followed by the warming effect of methyl salicylate as it activates heat receptors in the skin. The overall sensation is a penetrating warmth at the site of pain.

Do I need a prescription?

No. Deep Heat Max Strength 35g is a General Sale List (GSL) medicine available without a prescription.

Is Deep Heat Max Strength suitable for fibromyalgia pain?

Fibrositis (a term historically applied to soft tissue pain including fibromyalgia-type presentations) is listed in the indications. For localised musculoskeletal pain, topical application is appropriate. Deep Heat Max Strength does not address the central sensitisation component of fibromyalgia; it provides localised symptomatic relief. Seek pharmacist or GP advice for a broader fibromyalgia management approach.
